Spacer Image 1 Day Vacations with the Kids

When you have kids, it is sometimes difficult to take even a short vacation because of the cost and the arrangements that must be made in order to travel with children. That’s where the idea of a one-day vacation is convenient and much less expensive than traveling for overnight stays. In fact, some week long vacations are better defined in terms of a short vacation getaway.

Many people would not be able to take their kids on any kind of a vacation, if it were not for the one-day excursion trips. When you consider the cost of lodging, food, travel expenses, and then the cost of sightseeing, a family vacation can easily cost over $1,000 for just a week at the shore, let alone going on a trip anywhere else. It’s little wonder that for many people, taking an out of town vacation means staying with relatives.

Amusement Park

No matter where you live, there is more than likely an amusement park within driving distance, and this short vacation getaway is fun for the kids and the parents. This is especially true, if you have a park similar to that of Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Similar parks exist throughout the United States and Canada and are a great way to spend the day with the kids. Most people begin with a water park, because it closes earlier than the amusement park, and then after dinner when the sun begins to lose some of its heat, they go to the amusement park and stay until closing. Not only is it a great short vacation idea, the kids will be happy and content, and likely ready to fall into bed without a problem when you arrive home.

Although there is food in the parks, those on a budget may want to consider packing a lunch. If you aren’t keen on cold food for dinner, there are some picnic areas available by reservation where you can grill at Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. Other parks likely have the same setup, but you will need to check with the one you wish to visit. Many of these amusements have combination parks, and on warm summer days, they give you both options.

Day at the Beach

What child doesn’t love the beach? Get up early; pack your picnic basket, and head to the beach for a day of fun in the sun! Of course, you will pay for parking, unless you find a spot that is close to a major thoroughfare and can park free in a shopping center and walk to the beach, as is the case in Ocean City, Maryland. Many beaches have water slides and some carnival rides as well, especially those who have boardwalks. Your smaller, family beaches may not be as well equipped, but slipping off to a day by the ocean is likely to yield you a great deal of fun activities for adults and children alike.

Nature Walk

Although you may think your children would find a nature walk boring, the truth is, most children are close to nature and love to find out about the different animals and how they relate to their native habitats. Of course, this may not hold true of teenagers, but for the younger children, they are immensely fascinated to be among nature and all its beautiful creatures.

Historical Villages

This relates to the various parts of history that your children may be learning in school or have already learned, and will therefore find it an interesting addition to their newly developing knowledge. This can include places such as Williamsburg, Virginia; historic New Castle, Delaware; Peach Patch Island, Delaware City, Delaware; Washington, D.C.; Arlington, Virginia, and much more. Your children will be fascinated by the many wonders that lie within the confines of these colonial and revolutionary villages, and in many cases, they will walk the paths that the people of the period walked. They will be able to see life as it once was, and the way people lived before all the modern conveniences we have. Yes, they will see life as it existed before computers, televisions, stereos, cell phones, and strangely enough, MALLS.

Many other ideas may come into mind for an interesting short vacation, and a one-day trip does not have to be expensive. Even visiting the places with a higher price tag, such as amusement parks, are still less expensive and less tiring than taking a one-week trip to unfamiliar places and spending so much time sightseeing you need to take a vacation in order to recover. A vacation is meant to allow you to relax, unwind, and spend some quality time with your spouse and children. Day trips that you plan impulsively allow you to do that much easier than planning a long trip away from home.
